Teeth Care : the essentials

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

fun teethSay cheese! Whether you are having your picture taken or are smiling at someone, one of the first thing people see are you teeth. Because when you are expressing yourself and when you are talking, your teeth show first, it is important to take care of your teeth and gum. A beautiful and healthy smile will attract more people, will get you an overall more positive attitude of people around you.

Your teeth are important, in many other ways. Healthy teeth help make a healthy person. They allow you to eat, to speak clearly, and of course, to you look your best.

After your eat, sugar covers your teeth. And bacteria love that sugar, which allow them to proliferate. The bacteria break that sugar down into acids, which cause your tooth enamel to weaken, causing holes in your teeth, or in other words, cavities.

Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria and sugars that constantly forms on our teeth. They are the direct cause of gingivitis, a gum disease that can make your gum go red and swell.

The lack of teeth care will lead to cavities and unhealthy gum, which can be make your mouth very sore, making it difficult to eat. With unhealthy teeth and gum, chances are that you won’t feel like smiling so much.

The invention of toothpate… and before

With years and years of research, we now know how to take care of our teeth. Before the invention of toothpaste and toothbrushes, when people didn’t know as much about teeth care, as people got older, their teeth would rot away. They would have to endure pain. If the toothache was unbearable, they could only pull out the rotting teeth out. But today, with our technology and science, we have the tools to take care of our teeth. However, although we have the right tools, you also need to take the time to use them. And while you’re swishing that minty, vanilla-y or bubble-gummy fresh toothpaste around your mouth, think about how lucky you are. Over 100 years ago, people were using

* ground-up chalk or charcoal
* lemon juice
* ashes
* tobacco and honey mixed together

to clean their teeth…

The first minty fresh tooth cleaning product was invented only about 100 years ago. A few years later, the toothpaste tube was invented, allowing people to squeeze the paste right onto the toothbrush! Popularity of tooth brushing rose during World War II as the  U.S. Army gave toothbrushes (we bet they weren’t best electric toothbrushes!) and toothpaste to their soldiers, who learned to brush twice a day.

Today, there are plenty of flavors and types of toothpaste to choose from. There are mint/vanilla/cinnamon flavored toothpaste, there are toothpaste for kids, for people with sensitive teeth, there are toothpaste with whitening added. Just watch TV commercials or ads in magazines to see the number of varieties in tooth care products. Most toothpaste brands contains fluoride, a product also used at your dentist’s office, which helps increase the strength of your teeth, protecting them from cavities. But tooth care products doesn’t stop there. You probably own a manual toothbrush, a best electric toothbrush, floss that were designed to help you take care of your mouth and teeth.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Here are some tips to keep your teeth healthy.

* Brush a minimum of twice a day — after breakfast and before bedtime. If possible, brush after lunch or after sweet snacks. Brushing often will help break down plaque, reducing the chance of painful gingivitis.
* Brush your teeth properly. Spend some time to brush the teeth at the very back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth are more difficult to access, so make sure you spend some time brushing them. Ask your dentist to show you the best way to brush.
* Don’t rush it. Take your time brushing and spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time. An electric toothbrush can be a good tool to use as they often include a timer, so your never underbrush.
* Make sure to change toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3 months. You can opt for a toothbrush that have bristles that change color, indicating when it is time to change the toothbrush.
* Ask you dentist about using an antibacterial mouth rinse. Note, it is important not too overuse mouth rinses as they can kill the “good bacteria” .
* Floss every night, or after every meal and snacks. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist how to floss properly.
* Brush your tongue. This will help keep your mouth fresh longer.
* Make sure to visit your dentist every 6 months. A regular visit a the dentist office will help reduce the chances of cavities and gum diseases.
* Don’t eat too much sweet food. Drink lots of water.

And last but not least, don’t forget to smile!

Review on Sonicare Brush Heads

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

If you want to purchase Sonicare brush heads products, visit our products section below.

Sonicare is one of the best electric toothbrushes available on the market. While a good electric toothbrush will help you keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy, we have to give some of the credits for the brush head as well. To be effective, Sonicare brush heads have to be change every 3 months to give optimal brushing results.

Before purchasing your Sonicare, it is also important to determine what type of brush head suits you the best. You basically have the choice between the ProResults and the E-series.

Note
Because the new FlexCare+ handle and ProResults brush heads are different from the previous Sonicare e-series brush handles and brush heads, the e-series brush heads are NOT compatible with FlexCare+ handles while the ProResults series brush heads are NOT compatible with the e-series handles.

e-series replacement headE-series Sonicare brush heads fit:
-Elite models
-Essence models
-Xtreme models
.

ProResults replacement headProResults Sonicare brush heads fit:
-FlexCare+ models
-HealthyWhite models

The ProResults brush head unlike the e-series brush head has an improved design allowing for a faster movement with no magnet or metal parts, and uses less plastic to support the head itself, making easier to replace and more environmentally friendly.

.

ProResults v. e-series Sonicare brush heads.

As I mentioned above, each Sonicare toothbrush model fits a specific type of Sonicare brush head. While both type of brush were shown to be effective, there are several differences between them, and the ProResults is a higher end product that will give you significant advantages, which can influence you into choosing a Sonicare toothbrush model over one that is only compatible with the E-series Sonicare brush heads. Let see what advantages and disadvantages each model have.

Convenience : ProResults brush heads

One of the biggest advantage of the ProResults Sonicare toothbrush heads are the way that the replacement head is fixed to the handle. Because it snaps into place, unlike the E-series heads that are screwed onto the handle, it is much easier to replace or interchange the brushes between many users.

Cleanliness : ProResults Sonicare brush heads

Another great advantage of the ProResults is the fact that there are less “holes” and nooks than in the e-series due to changing heads every day when the handle is used by many users in the household, giving less opportunities for goop to accumulate in the cracks. Therefore, ProResults toothbrushes and heads will results in an overall cleaner toothbrush over time, and may be more appealing to some consumers.

On the other hand, if you are not planning on sharing your best electric toothbrush handle, these disadvantages of the e-series may not be a problem for you.

Stability and fixation : E-series Sonicare toothbrush heads

One of the big advantage of the E-series is that, because you have to screw it tight, some electric toothbrush owners feel that the E-series heads fixes more firmly to the handle of their Sonicare than the ProResults do.

The Bristles : ProResults toothbrush heads

One of the most important difference between the Sonicare brush heads ProResults vs E-Series is the design of the bristles. Because the ProResults heads have a much larger and wider head, therefore a larger bristled portion, resulting in a wider sweeping motion and a more efficient brushing. The ProResults also features a longer head than the E-Series Sonicare brush heads, making back teeth more accessible with this brush head for many people who have problems accessing their rear teeth.

The Cost : ProResults Sonicare brush heads

The handles that use the E-series heads are, with no doubt, much more affordable than the handles that use the ProResults heads. However, the ProResults heads themselves are more inexpensive than the the E-series heads (E-Series – $30 for a pack of two on amazon.com, ProResults – $30 for a pack of three on amazon.com).

So…
Overall, the ProResults is the favorite and of most people. Also, this head was specially designed for the best electric toothbrush on the market, the Sonicare Flexcare. The Philips Sonicare Flexcare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with or without Sanitizer is a great toothbrush, and the duo Flexcare/ProResults will keep you and your dentist happy.

Top 10 electric toothbrushes : our readers favorites

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

In this post, I will share the top 10 best selling electric toothbrushes according to readers on this site.

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic ToothbrushWhen I recently asked readers what their best electric toothbrush was, there were no doubts, Philips and Oral-B stole the show this year. The gold this year goes to the high-end Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush. The Flexcare model with the sanitizer, is just as good, maybe even more better, but it’s pricier cost puts it in second place. The Philips Sonicare FlexCare were far the most popular and preferred electric toothbrushes, and, according to our customers, the best overall. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that Oral-B Care SmartSeries 5000 is another favorite and, to our opinion, probably of equal quality to its Flexcare competitor.

1. Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush BEST OVERALL

2. Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with Sanitizer

3. Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 Rechargeable Toothbrush

4. Oral-B Vitality Precision Clean Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush BEST FOR SMALL BUDGETS

5. Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9950 Rechargeable Toothbrush Special Edition 2 handle pack w/ 2 Smart Guide, 3 Brush Heads, 1 Base & 1 Travel Case BEST FOR TRAVELERS

6. Oral B Triumph 9900 Toothbrush with Smart Guide

7. Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9400 Power Toothbrush

8. Philips Sonicare Essence e5500 Power Toothbrush

9. Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 Power Toothbrush

10. Philips Sonicare Elite e7300 Power Toothbrush

So here’s the list, starting with our #1! Surprisingly the Oral-B Vitality Precision Clean Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush was shy of the third position this year, which is probably due to, like a customer nicely reminded me, “can’t beat the price”. Oral-B again did very well with the Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9950 and 9400 Power Toothbrush. But this is no surprise as Oral-B seems to have been catching up with Philips over the last years to produce great quality electric toothbrushes. This is a good thing as it gives customers plenty of great quality electric toothbrushes at different price range to choose from.

Finding the Best Electric Toothbrush Online

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

As you’ll see from browsing online, the number of choices for electric toothbrushes can simply be overwhelming. How do you know which one is best? There are so many choices, from familiar brands like Sonicare and Braun, different models, some with extra options. So what’s the best electric toothbrush for you? Like most people, deciding which is the best electric toothbrush for your needs and budget can be an intimidating task, given the myriad of models and choices available. Luckily, we’ve put together this guide to help you, step-by-step through the process.

1) Check out a major online retailer, such as Amazon.com, or a website which specializes in electric toothbrushes, such as http://www.best-electric-tooth-brush.com/. Often, they will have summaries of their product guides available, as well as handy picks from their reviewers, and readers. Other important features include being able to search and group by popularity, ranking, price, and other factors.

2) Decide what your budget is. There are great models at every price range, just some come with more or fewer features. Decide how much you’re willing to spend, and narrow down your search to only include those products.

3) Now that you have the possibilities reduced to a small subset, you can check out all the models which have been rated with 4 or 5 stars (ideally 5). Click on each of them and read some of the customer reviews, this will give you a good idea of what other people like yourself thought of the product. Their reviews and insights into the product can help you in your decision.

4) Any toothbrushes are probably highly rated by other customers, and fall into your price range. Look at some of the features listed and decide what’s important for you to have.

Maintaining your Electric Toothbrush

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Owning an electric toothbrush can be great, as they do a much better job than a traditional toothbrush, with the benefit of being easier to use. Unfortunately, an often overlooked aspect to owning an electric toothbrush is care and maintenance of said brush. It is advised that you periodically clean and disinfect your toothbrush to ensure that it is doing the best job possible. This requires more than a quick rinse under the tap after use. We’ve put together a small guide to help you keep your toothbrush clean and fresh.

1) Always rinse after using. This is the first and easiest step to keeping your electric toothbrush clean. After using it, rinse it off and rub the bristles clean with your finger. Be sure to place it back in the rack properly as well, don’t leave it sitting around on the counter where it can collect germs and bacteria.

2) Periodically take the head off, and wash the parts with a mild, soapy solution. Most electric toothbrushes will come with detailed instructions on cleansing and maintenance, so be sure to refer to those for more details.

3) Use either hydrogen peroxide, or bleach, mixed with water (about 3 parts water, 1 part bleach/hydrogen peroxide). You want to dilute it first, as a high concentration can damage the bristles on your brush and discolor the plastic. Leave your toothbrush head to soak for about 20 minutes before removing it from the solution and rinsing it thoroughly. Do this once every few weeks.

Proper care and maintenance of your electric toothbrush translates directly into healthier teeth for you. Do your dentist a favor and keep your toothbrush clean and well maintained!
