In a lifetime, chances are that you have used a manual Oral-B toothbrush. If you thought they were good, wait until you try the electric Oral-B toothbrush.

Being one of the favorite, this awesome product uses an impressive technology that combines both oscillations and pulsations. They have smaller head brushes, which make them the favorite for people with a smaller mouth. What really makes wowed me in first place with the SmartSeries 5000 is the pressure sensor, which automatically detect if you are putting too much pressure on the toothbrush. If the amount of pressure detected is too high, the toothbrush simply stops, preventing you from damaging your teeth and gum over time. The visual timer is also a great addition to a regular toothbrush, at it allows you to visualize exactly when to change side when brushing. If you think it is a bulky gadget to have in your bathroom when not in use, you will be happy to learn that it can also be used as a clock when you are not brushing.

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus, Rechargeable

One of my favorite of all electric tooth brushes has always been the Sonicare Flexcare by Philips. A few months ago, Philips has announced its newer model, the FlexCare Plus, which is fancier version of the FlexCare. The Sonicare FlexCare offer an amazing brushing with the patented sonic technology. With this technology, the bristles move so fast that it remove every little bits of food stuck to your teeth. This awesome toothbrush is highly recommended by many dentists, and will have your dentist or dental hygienist wonder where the cavities and plaque went in so little time. Although it doesn’t have the visual quad timer the Oral-B has, the Sonicare has a built-in quadpacer, which is basically a beep every 30 seconds to let you know that it is time to switch to the other side of the jaw. The Sonicare Flexcare Plus also comes with a sanitizer, which kills most, if not, all the bacterias and germs left on your toothbrush head.

By the way, although the Flexcare Plus offer some nice upgrades, if you already have the Flexcare, I would suggest you stay with it until it is time to change your toothbrushes, as the changes are minimal enough that you do not need to invest another chunk of money in the slightly upgraded model.

Waterpik Sensonic Professional Toothbrush

My last pick is the Waterpik Sensonic Toothbrush, which is one of the best option out there if you don’t want to spend over 100 dollars on a toothbrush. If you are looking for a less pricey model, you might want to consider this one. The Waterpik Sensonic is very similar to the Sonicare. It uses a sonic technology as well, uses similar brushes (the square/rectangular ones) and has a built-in quadpacer that beeps every 30 seconds. But the Waterpik is not only a copy of the well loved Sonicare, it has some great features of its own, such as the use of two different types of brush heads for superior cleaning. As a matter of fact, the toothbrush comes with a standard head brush and the “interdental brush head”, which was created to help you brush between your teeth.

The Waterpik may not be the high end models the Oral-B 5000 or the Sonicare Flexcare Plus are, but is an overall good product for its price. Plus it is so much affordable!

1. What does this mean?

Dental health includes all aspects of health and how our mouth works, especially regarding our teeth and gum. Other than to allow us to eat, talk, laugh (think about white smiles), our teeth and gum also have to find infections and bacteria, which can cause cavities, gum inflammation, teeth decay and bad breath.

Cavities is a hole that appear in the teeth and is the most common dental health problem. Cavity prevention consists in a good oral hygiene combined with the use of fluoride and the consumption of food that will not cause cavities.

Just like the nose of the Sphinx, teeth can also erode. This is normal and is part of tooth aging. The tooth enamel can deteriorate following exposition to acidic substances other than the the one made by dental plaque.

Wearing out and abrasion are other form of tooth erosion. The wearing out of the teeth is caused by the natural contact of teeth between each other. Erosion is caused by external mechanical factors, such as bad brushing technique.

Paradontosis is the inflammation of the gum and other deeper structures. The most common type of paradontosis is gingivitis, which is the result of infection and inflammation of the gum and other dental tissues. Extreme cases of paradontosis can lead to tooth loss.

2. Why is dental health  so important for the well-being and the overall health?

Mouth health and teeth care are closely connected to general health and to the well-being. The ability to chew and swallow is essential to get all the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Moreover, lacking dental health can also impact on the speech and, which can possibly affect self-confidence. Dental diseases and problems also lead to financial and social issues, because they are costly to fix. Furthermore, dental pain due to poor dental health is also the cause of many miss school or work days.

3. The how and the why of cavities

Cavities are the result of acid generated erosion caused by the bacteria found in dental plaque. Those bacteria creates a sticky coat, the dental plaque. Those bacteria eat sugars and secrete acidic products. Those acidic products dissolve minerals such as calcium and phosphorus found in teeth. This is demineralization of teeth.

Cavities can be fixed. Saliva wash off the food in the mouth and neutralize the acidic products released by the bacteria. This process is essential for teeth remineralization. Saliva also brings the fluoride found in the toothpaste or other dental cleaning products to the teeth. Fluoride is used to help control cavities by helping tooth remineralization by inhibiting the production of acids by the bacteria, therefore slowing teeth corrosion.

Fortunately, the formation of cavity doesn’t occur easily. It usually happens once there is an unbalance between demineralization and remineralization.

4. What can increase the formation of cavities

There are several factors that can influence the development of cavities. The susceptibility to cavity varies between people and between each tooth in the mouth. The shape of the jaw and of the mouth, the structure of the teeth, saliva quantity like quality are all factors that will influence predisposition of tooth decay. For example, some teeth may have more hollows or cracks, that allow bacteria and acids to get in more easily. Sometimes, the structure of the jaw or the dentition structure make toothbrushing, flossing or cleaning of some area more difficult.

How much saliva is produced and its quality give a good idea of how teeth remineralization. For instance, cavities usually don’t form at the front of the mouth, where teeth are more exposed to saliva flux.

The type and number of bacteria in the mouth is also an important factor to tooth cavity. All bacteria can ferment sugars into acidic products, but some species of Streptococcus and Lactobacilli produce more. Therefore, a higher presence of those strains in the dental plaque increase the risk of erosion. Some people have higher concentrations of those bacteria on their teeth, generally due to poor dental hygiene.

This is why it is important that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime, with your electric toothbrush, floss your teeth every day and reduce you consumption on high in sugar food, such as candies.

Before the invention of toothpaste and toothbrushes, when people didn’t know as much about teeth care, as people got older, their teeth would rot away. They would have to endure pain. If the toothache was unbearable, they could only pull out the rotting teeth out. But today, with our technology and science, we have the tools to take care of our teeth. However, although we have the right tools, you also need to take the time to use them. And while you’re swishing that minty, vanilla-y or bubble-gummy fresh toothpaste around your mouth, think about how lucky you are. Over 100 years ago, people were using

Just watch TV commercials or ads in magazines to see the number of varieties in tooth care products. Most toothpaste brands contains fluoride, a product also used at your dentist’s office, which helps increase the strength of your teeth, protecting them from cavities. But tooth care products doesn’t stop there. You probably own a manual toothbrush, a best electric toothbrush, floss that were designed to help you take care of your mouth and teeth.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Here are some tips to keep your teeth healthy.

• Brush a minimum of twice a day — after breakfast and before bedtime. If possible, brush after lunch or after sweet snacks. Brushing often will help break down plaque, reducing the chance of painful gingivitis.
• Brush your teeth properly. Spend some time to brush the teeth at the very back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth are more difficult to access, so make sure you spend some time brushing them. Ask your dentist to show you the best way to brush.
• Don’t rush it. Take your time brushing and spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time. An electric toothbrush can be a good tool to use as they often include a timer, so your never underbrush.
• Make sure to change toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3 months. You can opt for a toothbrush that have bristles that change color, indicating when it is time to change the toothbrush.
• Ask you dentist about using an antibacterial mouth rinse. Note, it is important not too overuse mouth rinses as they can kill the “good bacteria”.
• Floss every night, or after every meal and snacks. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist how to floss properly.
• Brush your tongue. This will help keep your mouth fresh longer.
• Make sure to visit your dentist every 6 months. A regular visit a the dentist office will help reduce the chances of cavities and gum diseases.
• Don’t eat too much sweet food. Drink lots of water.

People often email me with the same question: what benefits would I get from an electric toothbrush compared to a manual one. There is one way to answer this question : in many instances, clinic research has shown that electric toothbrushes are preferable over a regular one in regards to prevention of gingivitis or removing as much dental plaque as possible. As a matter of fact, electric toothbrush are built with the ability of vibrating at a really high speed. Can you imagine a manual toothbrush going at 20,000 vibrations per minute? The technology of those brushes is now so advanced that most of them include features such as up to 6 cleaning settings, quadrant timers, gum massages and even pressure sensors. All these improvements were designed so you would get the best dental hygiene possible.

What should I look for in an Electric Toothbrush?

If you are getting confused will all the different terms you find with each model or each brand, here’s some help.

A. First, you need to know that despite the huge number of brands and models you can find either online (here) or at the supermarket, there are only two types of electric toothbrushes. Let’s check them out. The first type of electric toothbrushes are the vibration style one, which are toothbrushes that act like a fast manual toothbrush and can vibrate at a rate of 3,000 to 8,000 strokes per minute. They are typically less expensive than rotation-ocscillation toothbrushes (see below). They either use a rotary brush heads that spins in a circular motion or a pulsating brush head, that produces a forward-and-back horizontal movement. Being less pricey, they most often do not include high-end features like pressure sensors or quadrant timers. The second type of electric toothbrush utilizing sonic technology are the best electric toothbrushes and are generally carried in companies high-end or premium product lines. The sonic toothbrush rotates in one direction and then the other. They have lots of “horse power” in them, and the top of the line products can generate up to 40,000 brush strokes per minute, a significant improvement over the vibration-based electric toothbrush. Because of their ultra high speed, they create a sound wave that vibrates the molecules of water around them. The result: cleaner teeth and cleaner gums. Price: $100 to $200

B. Speed – How powerful do you want your new electric toothbrush to be? We learned above that the number of strokes per minutes is important and that sonic toothbrushes will brush your teeth in a more effective manner than the other electric toothbrushes. Some electric toothbrushes have several brushing modes to choose from and different power levels. These features are a great addition. This is especially great if you have sensitive teeth. If you are a new user, you may also want to start with a low speed, and progressively increase the vibration rate as you get more comfortable with the sensation.

C. Brush heads – What type of brush head do you prefer? If you need more info, we’ve written a whole section on brush heads here. Round or scare, rotary or pulsating, the type of brush head you select will depend of your level of comfort. If you have a small mouth, or small teeth, then you would probably be better off choosing a smaller head that will allow you to get those hard-to-reach areas more easily. Whichever your preference goes toward, remember that, just like for a manual toothbrush, these brush-heads need to be replaced every 3 months, and overused brushes are not as effective in removing dental plaque.

D. Multi-voltage Charger – Do you travel a lot? Then you may want to make sure that your electric toothbrush uses a multi-voltage travel charger so it can be conveniently recharged anywhere in the world. Some models even feature a travel case with…USB Charger! Now talk about convenience.

E. Warranties/Guarantees – Depending on the model/brand, some electric toothbrushes come with different warranties, a few months to up to 2 years! Electronic gadgets have many parts that can easily break, and a good warranty will prevent you from bad surprises and experiences, especially considering that you spent a lot of money on that new electric toothbrush.

F. Rechargeable versus disposable batteries – What type of batteries does that model use? Although that power toothbrush you are looking at may be really inexpensive, it may unfortunately may not be that much of a good deal on the long run if it uses disposable batteries. And what’s more annoying to run out of batteries when you are in a hurry? Best models can hold their charge for up to 3 weeks without having to recharge your electric toothbrush.

G. Size of the electric toothbrush – Are you buying it for yourself or for your children? Because kids have much smaller hands, it is best to get them a kids electric toothbrush, which is a good alternative. If you prefer to stick with one toothbrush base for the family (and we all understand… they are not given!), make sure to choose a smaller brush head (like a rotary one). A regular electric toothbrush may also be more easy to handle for them than a sonic toothbrush.

What Electric Toothbrush is best for you?

If you are a gizmo lover, that best electric toothbrush you will choose may need more than just a little “horse power”. We are in an era where technology is advancing so fast that even the dental world has had to catch up to it. So here are some other characteristics people do not think of, but that proves to be very handy when they’re there.

Now that we’ve discussed the two types of electric toothbrushes, vibration and sonic, let’s find out what else you need to consider before making your purchase. What other factors affect an electric toothbrush’s rating? Why do the best ones stand out from the pack? There are so many toothbrushes on the market, with such different features and price range, so it is important for you to decide what you think is essential, and what you think is optional.

One question/comment that seem to be discussed often is the price, the cost of an electric toothbrush. Although you may find that spending $200, $100 or even $50 on a toothbrush is exaggerated. But there are two things you ought to bear in mind. First an electric toothbrushes will help you save money on the long run. They are long lasting. For example, mine has lasted me so far 2 and a half years with no major problem. Obviously, the battery is not quite as good as when I first bought it, but it’s ok… three weeks versus two weeks is not a big deal… at least to me! Second, I’ve saved money on dental treatments.Hello toothbrush, goodbye dentist bills! Many people I’ve talked to have seen their dentist bill drastically go down after they purchased an electric toothbrush. And everyone is amazed by the results, dentist-like cleaning sensation, whiter teeth, no gingivitis. Sometimes, paying more money now will save A WHOLE LOT more later, which has been the case with my electric toothbrush. (BTW, you still need to do your yearly checkups at the dentist).

Beauty is not only how much you weigh, how you apply that makeup, how you do your hair, it start with good looking teeth and a good breath. If you meet a guy or a girl with bad breath, no matter how good looking they are, I can assure you you won’t be talking to them for very long!

But we haven’t answered the question yet : sonic toothbrush OR normal power toothbrush? In my opinion, sonic always remain the best electric toothbrushes. They are highly effective at getting rid of plaque and keeping your teeth cleaner. They simply perform better, clinical studies have shown it, and I personally experienced it.

For the purpose of testing different toothbrushes for you guys, I’ve purchased several of each type and tested them with the family for the course of 1 month each. The result : cleaner feeling, fresher feeling and deep cleaning sensation after the use of the sonic toothbrush versus the regular electric toothbrush. But don’t get me wrong, a good regular electric toothbrush still gave me a much cleaner feeling than a manual toothbrush. However, for the very low-end model (at 15$), I did not see any difference than with a traditional toothbrush, with the exception that my kids enjoyed brushing their teeth better using it than manually.

So this is where I give you my top recommendations and my electric toothbrushes reviews. On Amazon only, it is on the best-selling electric toothbrush, and has been rated 4.5 stars out of 5 by almost 500 users. It is among the top 5 toothbrushes related products sold on the site. This is easy to understand why : it got all the features you want. This high speed ultrasonic toothbrush has an illuminated LCD screen (which looks awesome), a built-in quad timer that vibrates to let you know it’s time to change side, a UV sanitizer* to make sure your brush head is germ free and 5 different brushing modes for customized oral care. This best sonic toothbrush makes wonders and includes a hard plastic case that holds the base unit and two brush heads. The toothbrush is very sleek and the overall toothbrush is very high tech. My other choice is the Oral B Professional Care Smart Series 5000 Toothbrush. The Oral-B 1000 Professional Electric Toothbrush is a well designed little toothbrush for the budget conscious consumer. With a few basic features we’ve come to expect from Oral-B, such as pressure sensors, basic timing and cleaning modes, and a nicely shaped toothbrush head, this toothbrush is more than enough to fit most people’s needs. While I prefer a more feature packed toothbrush, I’ve gotten this toothbrush for friends and family before without any complaints. The Philips Sonicare for Kids HX6311/02 Rechargeable Toothbrush is designed for children and comes equipped with unique features that cater to kids and parents alike. While most adult toothbrushes pack a lot of power, the Sonicare for kids is toned down to ensure that it won’t be too hard on your child’s teeth. Likewise, it includes several interesting features such as a progression mode timer, with the aim of gradually introducing your child to a full 2 minute brushing session. For parents concerned about how long this toothbrush will last, don’t worry. Not only is the Philips Sonicare for Kids built extremely durable, but it comes with brush heads for kids ranging from 4 to 7 and beyond, meaning that you’ll probably get several years out of this product. A Few Definitions

• Pressure sensor

I used to brush way too hard and didn’t even know it, thinking that I was making my teeth whiter. However, the problem is that, when there’s too much pressure, the enamel of the teeth (the white part) gets weakened. The other problem is that you can make you gum bleed, leading them to become oversensitive over time as well. This is why good electric toothbrush will often come with a pressure sensor to let you know when you putting too much stress on your teeth and gums.

• Built-in timer

The recommend brushing time is at least 2 minutes… But do you actually brush for 2 minutes? This is why built-in timers were invented and added to the high-end models. This 2-minute rule is what it takes to effectively remove dental plaque and germs. Some electric models even give you the options of brushing even longer (3 minutes), if you want to ensure the best results.

• Quad timer

There are four “quadrants” in your mouth – upper right, lower right, upper left, lower left. For a thorough cleaning, you have to ensure that you are actually spending as much time on each side of the mouth. Without knowing you, I can also certainly assert that 90% of the time, you spend more time on the two first quadrants you are brushing than the last two, and this is just normal human behavior. We get impatient by the end, and quickly finish up the last part of the mouth. So using a quad timer will help you know you’ve spent enough time on one side and when it is time to switch side.

You can probably guess, all those cool features we’ve just discussed are most likely to be found on the high-end products, the best sonic toothbrushes. You may find one or two nice features on budget toothbrushes, but but keep in mind that to enjoy these cutting edge features, you will need to spend extra money on your best electric toothbrush.

So here’s the list, starting with our #1! Surprisingly the Oral-B Vitality Precision Clean was shy of the third position this year, which is probably due to, like a customer nicely reminded me, “can’t beat the price”. Oral-B again did very well with the Oral-B Triumph Professional Care models # 9950 and 9400. But this is no surprise as Oral-B seems to have been catching up with Philips over the last years to produce great quality electric tooth brushes. This is a good thing as it gives customers plenty of great quality electric toothbrushes at different price range to choose from. Finally, travelers and geeks will love the Sonicare HX9332/05 Diamondclean which comes with a usb charging travel case (!!).

Change your brush head frequently

It is highly recommended to change the brush heads every 3 months, at least. However, in some cases, more often is better. For example, you might want to change your brush head after being sick, if you have a weaker immune system or if the toothbrush head has been worn out (for example, if the bristles are not straight anymore.

Put away your toothbrush

Rinse thoroughly your brush head after brushing your teeth. You should keep your toothbrush in a vertical position and not lying down against the counter top, where bacteria can grow. Humid environments are more conducive to bacterial growth, therefore avoid covering the head of your toothbrush as this increase germs growth and dry your toothbrush between brushing (shake it dry and air dry).

To reduce the amount of bacteria and germs on your brush head, you can try using mouthwash before brushing. However brushing your teeth twice a day can and will also achieve the same results. Indeed, the less germs in your mouth, the less germs on your toothbrush…
